Single-discipline or integrated support: how to choose

3 minutes read
Engineering project work

Every oil and gas job starts with a decision about how to bring in outside support. Some operators hire a separate specialist for each task and coordinate the work themselves; others hand a package of work, or a whole project, to one contractor. Nextor provides a full range of products and technical services for oil and gas development, with the flexibility to deliver single-discipline support or integrated field solutions. This article looks at when each approach tends to fit.

Single-discipline support

Here each contractor delivers one defined scope, such as mud engineering for a drilling campaign, a chemical treatment programme, an inspection campaign or the supply of equipment. This model suits clients with a strong in-house team to plan and coordinate the work, a clearly defined task, or a gap in one particular skill. The client keeps direct control and chooses each specialist. In return, the client also manages the interfaces: making sure each contractor’s work fits with the next, and that nothing falls between them.

Integrated solutions

Many oilfield challenges cross several disciplines. A field development, for example, needs subsurface studies, well planning, drilling, completion and production to fit together: the well has to reach the right part of the reservoir, and the completion has to suit the way the well will produce. In an integrated approach, one contractor coordinates these disciplines, so that decisions in one area take account of the others. The client deals with one point of contact and one plan, and has fewer interfaces to manage.

Turnkey projects

A turnkey project goes a step further. One contractor takes responsibility for delivering a complete, working result, from engineering and procurement to installation, and hands it over ready for use. This suits well-defined projects where the client wants a single point of responsibility for scope, schedule and budget. The client’s main tasks become setting clear requirements at the start and checking the finished work.

Questions to help you decide

  • How clearly can the scope be defined today?
  • Does your team have the people and the time to coordinate several contractors?
  • How many disciplines does the job involve, and how closely do they depend on each other?
  • Who is best placed to manage the interfaces between them?
  • What reporting do you need to track progress, cost and HSE performance?

There is rarely a single right answer, and the same client may use different models for different jobs.

Good planning matters either way

Whichever model is chosen, the way the work is planned and run makes the difference. Nextor combines practical field experience with structured engineering workflows. It prioritises competent personnel, fit-for-purpose tools and clear reporting, so that clients can track progress, performance and HSE compliance throughout project execution. In practice, that means:

  • Project planning and risk assessment, with method statements, job safety analyses (JSAs) and execution plans
  • Rapid mobilisation planning and site readiness coordination
  • Daily activity reporting and close-out documentation
  • Lessons learned and continuous improvement to reduce non-productive time (NPT) and improve efficiency

On site, risk assessments, toolbox talks and permit-to-work discipline support Nextor’s zero-harm mindset. Read more about how Nextor works.

How Nextor can help

Nextor’s integrated engineering services cover engineering design support, project coordination and technical support, turnkey project execution, equipment procurement and installation coordination, and operational optimisation solutions, with end-to-end coordination across subsurface, drilling, completion and production. For a single discipline, each of Nextor’s eight service lines can be engaged on its own. Either way, the aim is the one set out in Nextor’s core values: solutions designed around the client’s operational realities.
