Oil and gas equipment works hard. Pipework, vessels and valves operate under pressure, often at high temperatures and in corrosive conditions, and many stay in service for decades. Over time, walls thin, welds crack, coatings break down and seals wear. Inspection, asset integrity management and QA/QC (quality assurance and quality control) are the disciplines that find these problems before they cause a failure, and make sure new work is right from the start.
QA and QC are not the same thing
The two terms are often used together, but they do different jobs. Quality assurance (QA) is about the system: the procedures, plans, qualifications and records that make sure work will be done correctly. Quality control (QC) is about the result: the checks, inspections and tests that confirm a particular weld, component or delivery meets its specification. Good QA reduces the number of problems QC finds; good QC catches the ones that get through.
On a typical oil and gas job, QA/QC work includes:
- Checking material certificates, and that each item can be traced back to its certificate
- Confirming that welding procedures and welders are qualified for the work
- Agreeing an inspection and test plan, with hold and witness points where the client or a third party must be present
- Dimensional checks, pressure tests and coating inspections
- Compiling the records into a final dossier when the work is handed over
Inspection and non-destructive testing
Inspection establishes the condition of equipment, whether new or in service. It starts with a close visual examination and, where needed, uses non-destructive testing (NDT): methods that examine material without damaging it. The most common are:
- Ultrasonic testing (UT): high-frequency sound measures wall thickness and finds flaws inside the material
- Radiographic testing (RT): X-ray or gamma-ray images show internal defects, especially in welds
- Magnetic particle testing (MT): reveals cracks at or just below the surface of magnetic steels
- Dye penetrant testing (PT): shows cracks that break the surface of almost any non-porous material
The right method depends on the material, the kind of defect expected and the access available. Results are only as good as the procedure, the equipment and the technician, so qualified personnel and calibrated instruments matter as much as the method itself.
Asset integrity: from snapshots to trends
A single inspection is a snapshot. Asset integrity management turns snapshots into trends. Repeat thickness readings at the same points show how fast corrosion is progressing, which in turn shows how much life is left in a pipe or vessel and when it should next be inspected, repaired or replaced. Risk-based inspection takes this further, focusing effort where the likelihood and consequences of a failure are greatest instead of inspecting everything at the same interval.
Integrity also covers the equipment that protects everything else. Relief valves, emergency shutdown valves and other safety-critical items spend most of their lives doing nothing, so they need regular testing to show that they will work when called on.
Standards and records
Inspection and QA/QC work follows recognised codes and standards for pressure equipment, pipelines and welding, the operator’s own specifications and the applicable regulatory requirements. Whatever the standard, the record is what proves the work was done. A useful inspection report states what was inspected and where, the method and equipment used, who did the work, what was found and what action is recommended. Kept consistently, such records make audits simpler and give the next inspection a baseline to compare against.
How Nextor can help
